Tome of Spirits Review

May 22, 2019

“[The] tome in your hands holds many of the secrets of the beings known as spirits. Drawn from a wide collection of resources, it can be a powerful tool in the right hands. Or it can be a source of entertainment. How it is used is up to you”

-Tome of Spirits, Page 1

The TTPL crew were lucky enough to get a working copy of Tome of Spirits, the new source book for Endless Realms, from our friends at Lunar Games!  They're in the last stretch of their kickstarter, which you can check out here:

Here are some of our thoughts!

For GMs and players alike, Tome of Spirits is a beautiful piece of worldbuilding for Endless Realms. Belief and mythology is important to any culture, and this book gives you the tools to incorporate those mythologies into your game.

When we last played the game, we had a lot of questions about the exact power and place of spirits in the world of Lumis, but ToS addresses this in the first two pages! Spirits are described in multiple evolving ways, which gives GMs a chance to use the description that suits their story best. Multiple ranks of spirits, types of energy, traditions, and spiritual aspects are covered.

All of these aspects are bound to inspire countless plot hooks for possible adventures. Variety is the spice of life.

In fact, there’s an entire section on incorporating spirits into adventures-- for instance, multiple roles that spirits can play as NPCs, or how spirits belong in multiple realms. The examples given here are brilliant and diverse.

Our game of Endless Realms also discussed corrupted spirits, which ARE IN THIS. YO. There’s an entire section on corruption, what it does, and how to combat it! We are very excited about this.

The book isn’t only worldbuilding; it also adds mechanics to the system by giving readers new Class Paths and Skills.

We were all really charmed by the class paths. The Divine Advocate path sticks out to us especially;  might not expect a law magic class to be focused on the unruly natural world, but the build finds a wonderful synthesis where you could play what is akin to a natural rights lawyer or an activist, which is A+ to nerds like us. Another great one is the Evangelist path for the Dandy. It slots right into what the Dandy is trying to be, and ties into the natural charisma of the class.

The book gives you some spiritually imbued items to incorporate into your game, as well as some more mundane items. The items have a wide range of rarity and power, including cursed items (a fun addition to any game). Want your players to be stuck reading the “Boring Tome” or give them a nice magical fluffy pillow? ToS has you covered.

There is a huge amount of content in this book.  It might be daunting at first, especially if you’re new to Endless Realms (our eyes may have boggled at the initial sight of it). However, if you already know and love Endless Realms like us, that shouldn’t be a problem. We would definitely recommend this book as an addition to any Endless Realms game.
